The interesting link between marriage age and divorce

On Behalf of | May 23, 2024 | Family Law

One of the prime indicators of whether or not you will get divorced is simply when you initially got married. The younger you were when you decided to tie the knot, the greater your odds of divorce.

This is not to say that everyone who gets married at 18 is eventually going to get divorced. You can certainly find many examples of couples who stay together for a long time. But when you look at all couples who get married at a young age, the statistics just show that they get divorced at a higher rate than those who put it off until they’re a bit older.

What is the ideal age?

These studies have determined that the current ideal age to get married is 32. Couples who put off marriage until their early 30s tend to have greater stability and get divorced less often. Part of the reason for this could be that they are more advanced in their careers, so it’s easier for them to financially support a family than it would’ve been when they were 22.

But one intriguing thing to keep in mind is that the odds of divorce start to go up again after age 32. Someone who is 33 has 5% higher odds of getting divorced. This shows that simply procrastinating marriage is not the key to long-term success.

What legal steps do you need to take?

Regardless of when you got married, if you’re considering a divorce, you need to know exactly what legal steps to take. It’s also important to understand your rights while dividing assets or splitting up custody of children.
