Does auto tech actually make the road safer?

On Behalf of | Mar 6, 2024 | Personal Injury

Automotive technology has really come a long way over the years. Today, there are many innovative types of tech designed to prevent car accidents. An example is a forward collision warning system, which may be paired with an automatic braking system. This type of technology allows the vehicle to sense an imminent collision and stop itself, even if the driver doesn’t do so.

Does this technology make the roads safer? There is some evidence that it is actually making people worse drivers. They’re making mistakes that they wouldn’t have made otherwise, leading to more accidents. So, while it is true that auto technology can prevent some accidents, it may be inadvertently causing others, making it less effective than people assume.

Why does tech make you a worse driver?

The issue with automotive technology is just that drivers become reliant on it or dependent on it. When they take the technology for granted, accidents still happen.

For instance, consider the aforementioned automatic braking system. If a driver becomes so used to anticipating that the car can stop itself and prevent a crash, are they going to pay less attention to the road? Would they be more likely to talk to passengers, use their phone or engage in other activities that take their eyes off of traffic around them? Many drivers will because they assume that the technology will keep them safe, and then they cause an otherwise avoidable accident.

If you’ve been injured in a car accident caused by a negligent driver, you may be facing extensive medical bills and other costs. Take the time to look into all of the options you have to seek proper compensation.
