Taking care of you and your children during divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 9, 2023 | Family Law

Divorce can be a challenging time for both parents and children. It can be an overwhelming, stressful and highly emotional time. It is hard to balance caring for yourself while caring for your children at the same time. However, self-care is imperative for you and your children to overcome this difficult time.

Things you can do to care for yourself

There are many ways to practice self-care, including:

  1. Taking care of your physical health
  2. Seeking support from friends and family
  3. Being honest with your children
  4. Keeping a route for the family
  5. Focusing on the positives

In addition to the above, practicing self-care can set an example for your children. It will show them how to care for themselves and love themselves.

Dealing with children’s emotions during divorce

Divorce is difficult for adults but can be twice as hard on children. It can disrupt their lives, making them feel confused, guilty and alone. It is critical to follow your children’s cues and remain alert for signs of depression or mental struggle. In addition:

  1. Be open and honest with your children. For kids, there is nothing worse than the feeling of uncertainty. They want to know they are and will be safe.
  2. Validate their emotions. Allow them to express themselves and let them know that their feelings, whatever they are, are valid and important to you.
  3. Create a safe space of trust and peace. If your child confides in you and asks you not to communicate, respect their wishes. Let them know they can trust you unless they are at risk of hurting themselves or others.

Going through a divorce is difficult for everyone in the family. It is critically important that you care for yourself as an adult to be there for your children. You must also do everything in your power to ensure the safety and security of your children.
